Chapter Nine

ANDREW WALTERS SAT on a wooden chair placed next to a closed door. He was waiting to be interviewed by Captain Monahan of Army Intelligence.

He was on edge, nervous, not knowing why he had been singled out. Was it possible he knew what he had been up to with Frissell? Had it something to do with the dead man Frissell killed? He heard that other men had also been called in the night before. What did that mean?

"Mr. Andrews," a voice called from behind the door.

He stood up, opened the door, and entered the office.

The captain was sitting behind a steel desk with an open file on top of it. "Take a seat," Monahan said, looking up.

Walters stepped up and sat down.

"I've called you in to answer some questions."

"Yes, sir?"

"You okay? You look, um, a bit unsteady. Do you need some water or something?"

"No, I'm good. Just a bit nervous, is all."

"Nervous?" Monahan asked.

"Yeah, being called in by an intelligence officer is like being called to the principal's office.”

"That's a funny way to put it. Relax. This is a routine follow-up to something I encountered when reviewing the security log books. You and a few others like to leave the site alone without clearing it with Mr. Kline. Why is that, and what do you do out there?"

"Sometimes it gets claustrophobic here, so I go out to clear my head for an hour or two. I didn't know I was breaking any rules."

"You didn't. The reason for reporting your sojourns is so that someone knows where you are. This is the high north, remember. Home for polar bears?"

"Oh," Walters said. "I never considered that."

"According to the security log, you were off-site four nights ago and had taken one of the snowmobiles. Where did you go?"

"Um, let's see," he said. "Oh, yeah, I remember. It was a beautiful, clear night, and I felt like going for a ride."

"That's nice, but where to?"

"Nowhere in particular. Somewhere to the south, I suppose."

"Did you come across anything unusual while you were out there?"

"Unusual?"

"Did you see or hear anything?"

"No, not that I recall. Is this about that dead trapper?"

"You know about that, do you?"

"Only what I heard around the station."

"Yes, this is part of that," Monahan said, closing the file and sitting back. "That's it. Thanks for coming."

Once outside the office, Walters sighed a long sigh of relief as he headed for his workstation, feeling like he had just missed a bullet.

Monahan watched as Walters stood up and left the office. Something about Walters bothered him, but he couldn't pinpoint what or why. Because of his reaction to the interview, he decided to take a closer look at his background. He reached for the phone, picked up the receiver, and dialled.

"Operations," a woman's voice said on the other end after one ring.

"This is Captain Harry Monahan," he said, adding his security classification code.

"Yes, sir?"

"I am currently on assignment at radar site BAR-2. I want a full background check run on a civilian technician employed at the radar site, BAR-2, Shingle Point.
